Faster widgets, hourly forecasts, and a simple Premium plan

First things first: all free features are still free, the same widgets you use today remain available at no cost. This update introduces a Premium option for people who want faster updates, richer forecasts, and a modern in‑app experience.

Why Premium exists

Unit Weather has grown to over 10,000 people using it every day. Widgets can refresh as often as every 15 minutes. If everyone hits that ceiling, that’s 960,000 server calls per day (10,000 × 24 × 4), or roughly 28,800,000 per month.

Running real weather data at that scale isn’t free. The weather API alone has cost $232 so far to support the free version, and I’ve made $0 from the app up to now. Premium helps cover the bills so the free experience can remain free, while unlocking upgrades for people who want more.

What free users keep

  • All existing widgets remain free.
  • Same reliable experience and conversion between °F and °C.
  • No forced upsell screens or nagging, enjoy the app as before.

What people asked for

The most common requests have been hourly forecasts and a faster flow after tapping a widget. Previously, iOS would animate to the old Fahrenheit ↔ Celsius config screen, then hand off to Apple Weather which had to fetch new data, a round‑trip that could take about 5 seconds each time you checked the weather.

What Premium adds

  • 15‑minute widget updates instead of every 3 hours.
  • Hourly forecasts, plus a wider widget that shows the next hours at a glance.
  • Instant, in‑app weather: the app opens with data already refreshed in the background, cutting the wait from ~5s to 0s.
  • New themes: glass, white dot‑matrix modern, and an image theme that shows a live background preview of current conditions.
  • Multiple city support for quick switching.
  • Full in‑app weather report with hourly and daily forecasts, “feels like” readings, and values in both °C and °F.
  • Modern liquid glass design throughout the in‑app experience.

About data sources and accuracy

Premium subscribers regain access to the Apple Weather API (removed earlier when it became too expensive to provide for free). There’s also a new, more affordable third‑party API that’s less accurate · it helps keep costs sustainable, and it remains available for subscribers as well.

Pricing designed to be gentle

  • $0.99 per week (billed monthly).
  • $0.99 per month (billed yearly).
  • $59.99 lifetime, a one‑time purchase.

If you’re happy on free, please stay, truly. If Premium saves you time, shows you the hourly details you care about, or you simply want to support ongoing development, the price is intentionally small.

Thank you

This app exists because you use it. Premium keeps the lights on, restores high‑quality data, and funds the faster experience many have asked for, without taking anything away from free users.

Note: The server‑call numbers above are an upper bound. Real‑world usage varies by time of day and user settings.
